Gynecomastia Surgery in Turkey

Gynecomastia surgery reduces breast size in men, flattening and enhancing the chest contours.

In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may be reduced.

Plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia is technically called reduction mammaplasty.

What is gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition of overdeveloped or enlarged breasts in men that can occur at any age. The condition can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity or the use of certain drugs.

Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair your self-confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition.

Gynecomastia is characterized by:

  • Excess localized fat
  • Excess glandular tissue development
  • Sometimes excess breast skin
  • Presence unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts)

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedures. The options include intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. Your doctor will recommend the best option for you.

    Liposuction Techniques

In cases where gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction techniques alone may be used.

    Excision techniques

Excision techniques are recommended where glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed to correct gynecomastia. Excision also is necessary if the areola will be reduced or the nipple will be repositioned to a more natural male contour. Incision patterns vary depending on the specific conditions and surgical preference.

Combination of liposuction and excision techniques

Sometimes gynecomastia is treated with both liposuction and excision.

    2-3 Days Following Surgery

Patients may experience pain, tightness, or tenderness in their chest immediately following surgery. When necessary, discomfort can be managed through prescription pain medication or Tylenol. Some patients experience areas of decreased feeling or numbness. If a long acting local anesthetic like Exparel is used the numbness may last beyond the 3-day period. Some individuals may feel nausea from the anesthesia utilized in procedure. While patients may notice results immediately, the chest area may appear swollen. The use of a compression garment is recommended, which helps minimize swelling and discomfort while helping the area heal. Most surgeons recommend total rest during this period, with activity restricted to light walking. Patients should avoid taking a shower for 24 hours. Some patients may be advised to sleep on their back in an elevated position at a 45-degree position.

    1 Week Following Surgery

At the one-week mark many patients experience a decrease in pain and swelling. Most patients are able to return to work and perform light physical activities. However strenuous movements that involve the pectoralis muscles (pecs) should be avoided until the patient is cleared by their surgeon. If your procedure involved stiches you may need to visit your surgeon to have them removed. If your procedure required a drain then it may be removed. Compression garments should continue to be worn throughout the day. Many patients will feel comfortable sleeping flat on their back (side or stomach sleeping should still be avoided).

    3-4 Weeks Following Surgery

Most patients are cleared by their surgeon to begin normal exercise (although exercises that specifically target the chest should still be avoided). Compression garments no longer need to be worn and most patients will be able to take baths. Swelling and bruising of the chest is most of the way gone revealing the final results of the procedure.

    6 Weeks Following Surgery

The 6-week point usually marks the completion of the recovery process. Most patients can undertake all forms of exercise including strenuous movements involving the chest. Patients can also sleep in any position. There may still be some swelling in the pecs, which will naturally completely resolve after a few more weeks.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What causes gynecomastia?

Though the exact cause is not always known, gynecomastia has been linked to certain medications, hormonal imbalance and steroid use.

    Does exercise correct man boobs?

Exercise can reduce excess stored fat on the chest; however, it has no effect on the dense glandular tissue caused by gynecomastia. Some men are dismayed to find that no matter how hard or often they exercise, their breasts do not get smaller.

    How is gynecomastia treated?

The only way to reverse gynecomastia is through male breast reduction surgery. During the operation, the surgeon uses a combination of liposuction and excision techniques to remove fat and glandular tissue. Excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is tightened over the chest. The nipple-areolar complex can be reduced and relocated higher on the breast, if needed.

How much time does it take to recover from male breast reduction surgery?

Recovery varies by patient and the scope of their procedure. Most patients return to work and socializing after about a week. Light exercise can be resumed two weeks after surgery and more strenuous activities four to six weeks after surgery.

Is there noticeable scarring after surgery?

As long as the surgeon makes the incisions carefully and in the natural folds of the skin, the incision lines should fade considerably after surgery. Most men are happy to trade their enlarged breasts for barely noticeable scars.

Can man boobs grow back after surgery?

In most cases, the results of gynecomastia surgery are long-term. However, weight gain, steroid or drug use and hormone fluctuations may lead to a recurrence of gynecomastia. Pixl Clinic can provide more information about maintaining the results of surgery in a consultation.

What are the benefits of gynecomastia surgery?

In addition to improving the appearance of the chest, gynecomastia surgery can also lead to an increase in self-confidence and sexual satisfaction. Many men have newfound motivation to exercise and maintain their results.
